Capt. John Mitchell

The sailing adventure begins as we sail out of the port of Homer in beautiful Kachemak Bay. Our destination, Alaska's Outer Coast, is wilderness sailing at its best. We have mountains, volcanoes and ocean on a scale seen on very few places on earth. On the voyage expect to see eagles, seabirds, whales, otters and seals. We run multiday trips custom designed to give you a once in a lifetime Alaskan experience by sharing knowledge and insights about the natural history and culture of this incredible country.

Enjoy kayaking, hiking, sailing or just hanging on the hook and watching the world float by. Our wholesome delicious meals are centered around local seafood. We can always accommodate your food preferences in provisioning. We can customize trips to focus on the many species of pelagic birds feeding and nesting in the area.

The Mothership is a Skookum 47.
A cutter rigged pilothouse cruiser, she is solid, strong and comfortable. The heated pilothouse is great way to enjoy the trip in  comfort and safety. We take a maximum of six guests but four is much more convenient. There is a state room with a large V berth forward. A smaller state room with two single berths just aft of that. A large saloon for comfortable lounging with settee’s that can be bunks. Another small state room aft under the pilothouse is where the crew usually sleeps.

The Outer Coast is the wilderness coastline of the Gulf of Alaska. This is a remote and stunningly beautiful region that includes the Kachemak Bay State Park Wilderness Area and the Kenai Fjords National Park. The area has deep fjords and tidewater glaciers. Opportunities abound for world class kayaking, beachcombing or fishing. The activities are always determined by your interests and desires and, of course, your safety. Other destinations are possible give us a call and we’ll create an itinerary to make your dream vacation come true.

We will spend each night of the trip anchored in a secure secluded cove ensuring comfort and security. We don’t travel at night so you won’t miss any of the stunning country we travel through. We plan to have time at anchor each day for exploring beaches and tide pools or kayaking. Experience is not required for kayaking or sailing. Your captain has years of guiding beginner kayakers with patient, thorough instruction. Your safety is always the highest priority.

John Mitchell is a lifelong Alaskan. Born in the territory of Alaska he grew up in Juneau and Fairbanks. A deep love of the ocean and all it’s creatures large and small was imprinted at an early age. He is still happiest when exploring tidepools, searching for intertidal critters. The other passion, sailing, feeds the need for wind and waves and whales. He is a Coast Guard licensed captain with many years of experience on  the water. A skilled kayak guide and avid naturalist John loves to share his knowledge of this incredible country. He is trained in wilderness first aid and has years of experience operating in remote locations.
“ It is one of my greatest joys to share this country and instill a respect for a still pristine ecosystem.”
